The power that an engine can produce is limited by the amount of fuel that can be burned in the cylinder, and the amount of fuel is also limited by the amount of energy and air absorbed in each cycle of the cylinder. If air is compressed and its density increases before entering the cylinder, the same working volume of the cylinder can accommodate more fresh charge, thus providing more fuel and obtaining greater output power.
According to the idea of increasing intake density and power, as early as 1905, Alfred Biichi of Switzerland proposed a turbocharging scheme and conducted early experiments on diesel engine constant pressure turbocharging and pulse turbocharging systems. In 1925, he achieved success and obtained a patent. Subsequently, Swiss company Brown Boveri adopted exhaust gas turbocharging in marine engines, followed by turbocharging technology in aviation piston engines.
The adoption of turbocharging technology in automotive engines was relatively late, mainly due to the high requirements of turbochargers for automotive engines, which not only require high efficiency, wide flow range, but also meet the requirements of vehicle engine variable working conditions. And it also requires a simple structure, small volume, light weight, and low cost. It was not until the late 1950s that turbocharging technology was widely applied to automotive diesel engines and gradually promoted to gasoline engines. The vast majority of high-power diesel engines, more than half of automotive diesel engines, and a considerable proportion of high-performance gasoline engines have all adopted turbocharging technology. Generally speaking, after turbocharging, the engine power can be increased by 40% to 60% or even more compared to the original engine, and the average effective pressure of the engine can reach 3MPa. Supercharging technology, especially turbocharging intercooling technology, is considered an effective measure to improve the power, economy, and emission reduction of automotive engines
